History
Bethel has a lot of charming history. This is one of the newer area of Connecticut and was incorporated in 1855. Prior to that, Bethel was a parish of Danbury, Connecticut. Some of the more historic buildings include Bird’s Eye View and the PT Barnum fountain. Both Greenwood Street and South Street give you a good view of what life was like in this Connecticut town in the early part of the last century.
Famous Residents
Bethel is home to many famous residents from both the past as well as the present. For starters, showman PT Barnum was born in Bethel in 1810 and lived on Greenwood Avenue. Actress Meg Ryan was also raised in the town. Jan Miner, who played the manicurist, Madge, for the Palmolive commercials, died in Bethel. Another famous person, Thurston Moore, singer for Sonic Youth, was also raised in Bethel. Today, actor Bruce Willis has a home in this Connecticut town.
History of Growth
In 1860, when the first census for Bethel was taken, there were a little over 1,700 people in the town. The town kept growing each decade with the exception of the decade during WWI. Today, there are more than 18,000 people in the town. It reached its largest growth spurt between 1970 and 1980. Most of the people who live in the town are married couples. There are many families with children living in Bethel as well.
Factories

Bethel is about 60 miles from New York City, making a commute tedious, although there are some people who live in the town on weekends and spend weekdays in New York in apartments.
Small Town
Bethel is a small town with only 18,000 people and covering only 16 miles. This is one of the smallest towns in the commonwealth state, but it is for this reason that causes much of the allure of the town. People who want to get away from it all choose Bethel as the town where they wish to live and raise a family. The crime rate is very low and the schools are all highly rated. Best of all, Bethel is just far enough away from New York City too be away from the hustle and bustle, but close enough so that you can still enjoy the restaurants and shopping that New York has to offer.
